  • For some, this is a breakthrough development while for others; this might not be news to cherish. However, the fact is that South Dakota has become the first state across the country to allow its teachers to carry a gun in the campus, including the classroom.

There was a speculation that this law will be passed sooner than later, especially after what happened at Sandy Hook. The country has been subjected to a number of attacks on educational institutes leaving many innocents dead and injured over the past few years.

Carrying a gun is no mandatory according to the new bill. Instead, the local sheriff will indulge in weapons training program. These sessions will be conducted for teachers who would like to be armed while being inside the campus.

Ever since the news of a possibility of such a bill being passed started making the rounds, a number of educational experts stated that something like this will not work for sure. Educational institutes are not the kind of places where people need to be armed. There was also a concern about a possible scenario where the weapon reaches a student or any other member inside the campus.

However, what is fascinating to see is the kind of response most of the parents have showed. They are extremely happy to see such a bill passed. After the Sandy Hook incidence, a number of parents were scared to send their child to school. It is a natural reaction.

With teachers being armed, parents now feel a lot safer. What is also good to see is that teachers are being trained to use the weapon. Being armed is not the only solution. The weapon will only cause any kind of threat if the person is indeed trained to use it.

Whether this move will actually work or not is yet to be seen. According to experts who are backing it, teachers with guns will make the campus a safer place. However, there is a stern opposition to such a belief from different individuals.

According to people who are against the bill, in almost all the cases wherein a person has attacked an educational institute, he/she has been identified as someone who is suffering from mental issues. Hence, in such a scenario, one does not expect a mentally retarded individual to be scared if teachers are armed with guns. Infact, it may just turn the whole situation in some kind of a challenge and an individual may jump into doing something drastic just to prove that the bill is useless.

Experts also believe that in all the attacks, the attacker eventually shot himself or was killed by the authorities. Clearly, these individuals are not scared of death as they already seem to be tired of their life. Hence, one fails to understand as to how would armed teachers be any kind of help in reducing such attacks. If anything, keeping a track of individuals with automatic weapons might help big time.
