  • President Barack Obama has warned the Republican Party that has been pushing for a budget cut in education that any such move will seriously impact the interest of our country and is practically equal to an education arms race with countries like India and China.

In his White House Rose Garden, addressing the press with reference to proposal by Republican for an education budget cut, President Obama said that this is a shortsighted move. He went on to state that at present there is a fierce education arms race taking place among various countries in the world including India, China, South Korea and Germany.

If, at this point of time, we cut on education spending, this will be equal to unilateral disarmament. He stressed that our country cannot afford to do this right now. President Obama categorically declared that in the 21st century, only the nation educating its children the best will lead the global economy.

President said that ultimately, giving the best education for our children, is not only about preparing them for a lucrative career and jobs in the future and about making our nation economically more competitive. It is also about who we essentially are as a people.

He said that we should aim at building a bright future for our country where every child is given the opportunity to rise above station, faith and race barriers and can blossom to their full potential. He stressed on making the American Dream a reality. He added that the future we should strive to build is where college doors are open to anyone who wants to study. He said that this would not be possible if the Republicans were allowed to have their way.

The Republicans have proposed a twenty percent cut in the education. This essentially means at least eight million students will have to drop out of community colleges due to reduced financial aid. Community colleges will no longer have access to resources that can help them effectively prepare students for future jobs, the President said.

He stressed on the fact that today rate of unemployment has practically doubled for those with no college education. He added that the situation for those who do not have access to higher education will be no better as most future jobs created would require them to have had higher education.

He said that we must necessarily enhance our education level to world class and this is not only a moral obligation but an economic imperative. This is the only way we can escape from being out competed and out educated by other nations.

President Obama pointed out that efforts in this direction is on-going since the time his administration took charge. There is enhanced focus on education from cradle to classroom and from college to career.

He said that weak programs were challenged to compete for funds and there are efforts to reform Head Start. He said that those who benefit from tax dollars must necessarily show results in the form of better education for our kids. He said that the Race to the Top program launched in the states showed promising results and promoted teaching excellence and higher education standards on the whole.
