  • The American education system is facing an upheaval. This is especially in the case where the education of thousands of immigrant children is concerned. However, everyone is waiting for the Dream Act to be passed.

It is said that at least 65,000 illegal immigrant students graduate from American schools each year. However, according to the recent laws passed, they cannot get work permit after they graduate from schools and universities. Most of them come from their native countries to study here so that they can derive a better future by working in America.

However, given the current state of the economy there is a shortage of jobs and most Americans think that American citizens and students should be given the first preference over the others. Therefore, most of them want the DREAM Act to come through.

Charted in 2004 by the congress, it was created to document and help the youngsters between the age of 12 and 35 years in America who are not the true citizens of the country but are immigrants. However, this bill was failed in 2007 and now it had been re-introduced in the year 2009.

If the bill passes this time, the immigrants will have to enrol in the US Military forces or make sure they get into high school and get a graduation degree. If they can do either of these, then they can get work permit and continue to live in the country.

Also the bill states that they should have come to America before they turned 16 years of age. There should be no discrepancies and other issues related to their character. In short, they should morally validated people who will then be considered for American citizenship if they happen to fulfil all of the above.

Many are in the opinion that this bill should be passed. America has always been the land of opportunity for many and now that it is going through an economic crunch, back tracking of such things could spell a lot of problems. The government needs to work out some measures to straighten such issues out.

Everyone and anyone, belonging to any race and culture, working in America, finally contributes to the American economy. So in many ways, it is like the more the hands, the better for the country.

If the DREAM Act doesn’t come through, there will be many problems as well. Migrant students may choose other countries like Europe or UK to study further. This would mean that the funds that come in with these students would also stop. This too will affect and hurt the economy.

Scores of students from across the world come to American universities to pursue higher studies and it is only natural for them to seek jobs here and work here. It is a second home to most of the people.

Therefore, something needs to be done so that the students do not suffer. Else the entire purpose of education will be defeated.
