  • Alignment required between college and high school education

  • What we study in school and what we study in college is completely different. As college education is a natural progression from high school, it is understood that what we study in high school should, in a way, prepare us for college or at least  complement our college education.

But this does not happen in most cases. It is evident that schools that follow a curricula similar to what is being taught at the  community colleges are actually doing a favour to the students. This is because it helps students to adapt to the curriculum taught in colleges. And this also means that they will not have to go in for many remedial courses.

An academician from the University of Illinois thinks that the above system should be made compulsory in all the schools and colleges in our country. If not, there is absolutely no point in blaming our students for not being bright enough.

The academician also blames the system for the constant struggle students have to face to completetheir college education. She states that even though a great number of students enrol for college not many of them can complete it and there are many who drop out because they cannot cope up with the competition. In short students are not adequately prepared for college in their high school.

This problem persists everywhere, she adds. There is no alignment between the two educational systems. This means that the curriculum in college is generally prepared based on the performance ability of high scoring students and does not address the needs of the average students. According to her, this is not fair on the part of the department.

Most of the students, at least 58 percent studying in community colleges, we find are attending at least one remedial course. This situation as a whole looks pretty grim.

Agreed that the university or college life is different from life in high school. It is in colleges that we enter our young adult hood and go on to become responsible citizens but the foundations has to be clear from the base. Just because college means something different, does not mean that we must forget what we learnt in school. It has to go hand in hand.

In college you are expected to do everything on your own because you are considered to be a grown up but if you have no clue as to how to go about things, especially where studying subjects are concerned, then you are lost. This is where most of the students mess up and struggle to cope.

They falter and therefore, have to join remedial courses. This is a huge drawback and plays on the psyche in a negative way. They tend to lose their confidence and back track. So many times the struggle is so severe that students prefer dropping out. And frankly dropping out is not a good option.

If schools and colleges come to a common consensus then a lot can be worked out without students having to suffer.
