  • Should Immigrant Students be allowed to Work?

  • The US economy is extremely fragile right now. The country is making all the possible efforts to deal with recession hit times. While the market seems to have regained its strength, the education sector is worst hit.

Education is a fundamental right in the country and every child here has the right to education. However, a recent report claimed that although the US government is in the favour of granting education to the children of illegal immigrants, they will not be offered jobs. This means that while they can study easily, they will not have the right to pursue jobs.

But why put across such a half-baked policy? This debate has received many mixed responses. Those who are in the favour of granting the rights to education to the children of such families, think that when they can study, they should be allowed to work as well. This is because it will help them to pay their tuition fees and help generate some income for their families. Also if they are allowed to do so, in the coming years they will be working in the interest of the US economy.

But there is a different side to this debate. People who are not in favour agree that education rights is okay but keeping them away from jobs is the right thing to do because they are worried that they might take over the regular American child and take away their jobs from them. The US citizens are worried about the fact that the American children will be left with no jobs if jobs are offered to the immigrant children.

This recent news has of course not gone down with the immigrant students here. Many of them come to US to pursue and education and look for better career opportunities. By this news, it would mean that they would have to return to their own country where their education may not be able to help them out.

A student was heard saying that although she is an immigrant she never felt like one because she has been in America for a real long time and sees the country as her homeland and not her own native country. And now that she will not be able to apply for jobs, she feels cheated. She further added that while studying with regular students at the school and university level, she was at par with them and not being given the opportunity to acquire a job, she will be left out as an outsider.

Many such students feel the same. They came here to attain a degree which is now useless. Suddenly ones nationality is of more importance than ones efficiency and potential. All the previous years of hard work seem laid to waste.

However a government spokesperson stated that such a step was taken to first stabilise the real US citizens. They are having trouble to make ends meet because their jobs go to someone else. As a part of the government, it is their job to make sure the average American citizen is first looked after.
