  • Every year students look forward to the close of their school semesters. Summer holidays are a lot of fun and the longest holidays. Many plan vacations and head out to various locations to enjoy the
free time. On the other hand, some students already have big plans to start a summer job.

Summer jobs to many, are just another chore. They have to do it, either because they need the money or because they are not going anywhere for holidays. Jobs like these offer a variety of experiences to students. Most importantly it teaches them the value of money. But how do the students land such jobs? Either they answer the ads which call for part time jobs or summer internships or enrol with a summer job placement cell within their community or school.

One such placement job cell is in the news for harassing students lately. About 21,000 students had signed up with this placement cell so that they get placed with summer jobs. Jobs at recreation centres, amusement parks, etc were to be offered.

Now a few students, when they approached the cell were directed to a particular recreation park in
the centre of the city. They were promised that there would be work for them. For a student who has been promised a job, and getting a salary out of it, however measly, is a huge thing.

Unfortunately when these 17-year olds reached the park, they were told that were no jobs left there and also that there too many extra people on their pay roll. They couldn’t afford to hire anymore people. Dejected the students returned to the placement cell who then directed
them to another place. Here too, they were sent back.

It so happened that the placement cell had no clue that they kept sending more and more students to places that did not require people at work anymore. There were already many people working there.

The students who were rejected at both the places stated their frustration. They said that they should have been informed correctly about both the work places. Frustrations turned to anger because the information given to them was wrong in the first place plus they had
to travel to far off places in the heat only to be rejected again.

About 700 students in all faced such issues. Most of them stated that they thought if they signed up late, they had better chances of landing a summer job while the other stated that they joined early so they could better options to choose from. But neither of them got any
    options.

So why couldn’t the placement cell ask students to stop signing up with them? If they cannot handle and provide for jobs for so many of them, they need to stop at one point of time. Why wait for some dejected students to complain? At the end of it all, the students got
nowhere plus they ended up wasting their time when they could have done something constructive.
