  • There is a significant effort on the part of academics and policymakers to enhance access to colleges for students in America. This effort is predominantly due to stiff global competition and there is a big debate going on about providing increased education opportunities for students. It was aptly put by President Obama that one year of college must be completed by every American in order to face the global competition and emerge successful.

Efforts towards accomplishing and achieving the President’s goal and objective for higher education can be initiated everywhere on the lines of how the community colleges operate. Faculty and leaders of community colleges understand in depth the exact needs and requirements of students. They are present at the high and middle schools, they participate and advocate in courses offering dual credits and also skilfully adapt curriculum and resources in order to help students with a smooth and successful transition to a degree from high school.

Choices offered by the campuses to all student types are highly practical and result oriented. Students are encouraged and supported with friendly policies such as the open-door admission policy. These policies are great especially for students who are non traditional and want to script their own success path. Certificate programs are on offer which is a blessing for students who want to move on to a career quickly and seek a more direct path. Certain students also come seeking to be educated for purposes of enhancing skills and enriching themselves.

It is highly evident that community colleges enjoy tremendous success with the way enrolments are exploding recently. In the year 2008, Texas saw an enrolment growth of over sixty percent.
Community colleges are enterprising and have skilfully adapted the system to provide specific training responding to specific demands in the technological and medical fields. This creates an ideal proactive situation between the employees and employers. Students are allowed to work within a specific occupation and study operations. These programs point undeniably towards success as they support shared training and equipment.

Community colleges interact with local businesses in order to identify job opportunities for graduating students and promote employment. They offer a variety of internship programs and co-op programs to enable students to have a feel of the real world. These programs are specifically developed by school-company partnerships. This tailored scheme of community colleges makes them a fantastic place to start.

These colleges are definitely not leaning towards creating an uneducated work force. They are not eliminating the need for educated citizens. Those who are constantly debating on college improvements will do well learning a few aspects from them such as their willingness to be flexible and their genuine concern and interest in helping their students succeed.

They are definitely setting strong leadership examples that can be duplicated in various higher education segments for great improvement and a focussed effort towards achieving goals such as offering quality education for students and eliminating economic and social obstacles.
