  • Some of the environmental challenges that need to be addressed on an urgent basis include providing food, developing and transitioning to alternate energy sources, preventing pollution, controlling human population, climate change and biodiversity. In Florida the population is expected to rise to 24 million by the year 2030.

Problems created and developed by people have to be necessarily solved by people themselves. Just like every other city, area or country, it is also one of the major responsibilities of the citizens of Florida to show the world how a sustainable economy, society and environment can be created, especially since there are numerous people close to fragile resources.

In order to achieve this, higher education plays an important role in opening new perspectives and viewpoints. It is a challenging preposition for the field of higher education to ensure that students gain enough research skills, scientific knowledge and develop interdisciplinary perspectives. They must also be taught how to communicate complex ideas to a group and also on how to solve problems using multiple contexts.

Efforts have already been initiated towards achieving social, environmental and economic sustainability for the benefit of future generations by the School of Natural Resources and Environment. This is done by training engineers, social scientists, scientists and other professionals who in turn enhance our capacity of leading and devising creative management and resource.

Only good science can help students identify the nature of problems. Engineering is absolutely essential to devise and test solutions. In order to bring into action their solutions, it is necessary for them to be equipped with enough knowledge on instruments of culture, constitution, law, policy and economics. Higher education colleges and universities must educate students on how to identify workable solutions by working with stake holders. They must also teach students how to work efficient and smart in a business environment.

Students also have to be proficient at art and ethics which will guide and inspire them to converge the right with efficient. They must know how exactly they can work with statesmen who are responsible for public affairs. Every student must be educated keeping in mind that they are tomorrow’s environmental managers and business leaders.

All life depends on natural environment. Everyone must be stewards of environment throughout their lives as this is the only thing that can sustain our economy and preserve natural resources. Every state and country must therefore strive to produce environmentally responsible and scientifically literate population.

A potent and strong outreach and research program is one of the methods of providing meaning and efficiency to both graduate and under graduate programs. Real world problems must be brought directly into the classrooms, study centres and research laboratories. Strategy of every school must be to develop citizens who are environmentally literate and also teach the public to effectively integrate environment and natural resources to improve and enhance economic development, national security and overall quality of life.

Programs must be initiated at colleges and universities today that will make a significant change in environment care and natural resource preservation.
