  • International student traffic in the US is quite high as more and more students arrive here in a bid to acquire quality higher education. If you are a student from outside arriving in America to start your undergraduate or post graduate education and are not very proficient in English, then it is time to take advantage of opportunities to learn this language. Most of the students in the universities and colleges are more than willing to help you with your endeavour and the entire process can be exciting and fun.

There is nothing better than listening to another person speaking the language you wish to learn. Apart from paying attention to the conversations around you, you can put on the television in your free time to attentively listen to the actor’s dialogues. You can also listen to the radio broadcasts and get your ears attuned to the language. It is often not very difficult to understand their pronunciations and phrasing as these programs are for the benefit of a large spectrum of public.

If there are any words you are not able to understand, it is a good idea to keep a notebook handy and write them down. Just write them down as you hear them and you can later clear your doubts with your friends or professors. Especially helpful are those talk-programs on radio channels and TV as it is easier understanding a conversation rather than a speech.

As soon as you settle down in your housing, it is a good idea making a few friends and practices your English skills. Most of them will be eager to help you get a grasp on their language. Choose friends with whom you are very comfortable and get them to help you with your efforts. When you go out with them, it is a good idea allowing them to order the food or even purchase stuff from the shops. These are opportunities you can make use of to get a feel of the dialect and learn the language in the most effective manner.

As you will find a number of students from different parts of the world studying in American universities speaking English, you may be thoroughly confused with the different pronunciations and dialects. Your friends will be able to help you here to identify the right pronunciation and way of talking you must adopt.

Make sure you go through various English news channels such as the Los Angeles Times and CNN, your school news site and the local news to get familiar with the language. This way you benefit a lot as you can keep up to date with the news and current events as well as improve your English to a great extent. You can be confident in initiating or participating in conversations with your classmates, friends and instructors.

Another excellent method of mastering this language is to take down notes as much as possible. Writing words in English allows you to become more fluent and provide you with a strong overall understanding of the language.
