Department Summary
The University of North Texas (UNT) is a Carnegie R1 research university and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution and Minority-Serving Institution with a population of over 45,000 students. The Denton, Texas community combines close proximity to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas-Fort Worth) with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The UNT Chemistry Department consists of 31 faculty members, including 22 research-active faculty; over 100 graduate students; and approximately 200 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is in a growth phase, having hired an endowed Welch Chair in Chemistry, two new Associate Professors, and six new Assistant Professors in the past six years, and with plans to attain a core of 25 research-active faculty over the next few years. Our department has a strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, with specific strengths in materials chemistry, computational chemistry, and chemistry education research, as well as a growing interdisciplinary focus in chemical biology. Position Overview
The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas invites applicants for a post-doctoral teaching and research position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP). This non-tenure track faculty appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, with a planned start date of September 1, 2026. The primary responsibilities of the position include both research and teaching. Research responsibilities include conducting chemistry education research to characterize epistemological messages in chemistry. The VAP will collaborate with faculty in the Chemistry Education Division of the UNT Chemistry Department. Teaching responsibilities include teaching one section of a chemistry course at UNT each Fall and Spring semester at the undergraduate introductory level (most likely general or organic chemistry, depending upon the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs).
Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in chemistry, chemistry education, science education, or a related field. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated expertise in both quantitative and qualitative chemistry education/science education research methods;
A record of peer-reviewed publications in chemistry education and/or science education;
Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability to work/collaborate with others;
Interest in training/mentoring graduate and undergraduate chemistry education research students.
