Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Sciences Research Technician 3 position for the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center (CBARC) at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will be located in Moro, Oregon.
The Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center (CBARC, or Center) serves the research and development needs for dryland crop production in eight counties of northeastern and north central Oregon.
CBARC is composed of the Pendleton Station in Adams and the Sherman Station, in Moro. Center scientists conduct research at each station and many off-station locations. The CBARC staff typically includes 18 permanent and up to 12 temporary employees. Research at the Sherman Station is conducted by up to 10 scientists of different disciplines from CBARC, Corvallis campus, and the USDA – ARS at Pendleton and Pullman, WA.
This position supports the research and extension missions of CBARC by conducting farm and research plot operations, as well as outreach activities. The incumbent provides the necessary expertise and labor to help with the initiation of field studies, to prepare and maintain fields for use in an array of specialized research projects and to gather data as requested throughout the growing season. The incumbent may serve on CBARC committees (Safety, Field Day, Special Events, etc.), and assists with the purchase of equipment, vehicles, and supplies. The person in this position functions relatively independently, and carries a high level of decision-making responsibility for the Sherman Station. The direct supervisor (the Center Operations Coordinator) is located at the Pendleton Station, approximately 140 miles away. This position may also be asked to assist the Center Operations Coordinator with operations at the Pendleton Station, as well as attend meetings, etc. at this location.

Key Responsibilities
50% Research Project Facilitation:
Assists the Center Operations Coordinator with technical expertise in the coordination, selection and maintenance of research trials. Helps determine locations of trials by considering soil conditions and crop rotations. Further responsibilities include land preparation, planting, chemical application, and harvesting of crops to provide favorable research conditions for trials.
May work with project leaders to design and plan research projects to achieve desired research results. Executes, obtains samples, and collects and summarizes data upon request.
Anticipates needs of (with help from the Center Operations Coordinator) researchers and staff utilizing Sherman Station resources.
Initiates communication with researchers and staff as needed.
Keeps accurate records of all field operations, including implements used and materials (crops, seed, fertilizer, pesticides, and soil amendments) applied.
Operates computers to enter data (field history, field operations, pesticide and soil amendment applications, etc.) into the farm management information system.
15% Pesticide and Fertilizer Application:
Operates equipment to apply traditional and experimental agricultural chemicals including pesticides and fertilizers.
Maintains all necessary certifications, pesticide licenses and assure that the Sherman Station farm complies with all required pesticide safety standards.
Attend pesticide CEU classes annually.
30% Equipment and Facilities:
Administers the operation of the Sherman Station physical facilities, i.e. buildings, vehicles, equipment, machinery, grounds, and roads.
Maintenance of vehicles, farm equipment, buildings, road and grounds.
Maintains centrally located maintenance records of vehicle, farm equipment and facilities via Microsoft Excel.
Maintains buildings, landscaping, gravel and sodded roadways; including snow removal when necessary.
May prepare bid requests for major maintenance and repair jobs, makes initial judgments on bids and justifies that decision through communication with the CBARC Director, Center Operations Coordinator and Office Manager. Communicates the decision to successful and unsuccessful bidders, provides oversight of contractors, and accepts or rejects the quality of work performed.
Purchases equipment and supplies as needed in coordination with the Center Operations Coordinator.
Performs minor to intermediate repairs to vehicles and equipment, and establishes commercial contracts for major overhauls (motors, transmissions, etc.).
Plans and participates in the construction of research buildings, facilities, farm machinery and specialized plot equipment as needed.
Discusses anticipated major equipment needs with the Center Operations Coordinator so that these items can be considered in CBARC budget development.
