Job Summary
East Tennessee State University is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented System Administrator to join our Information Technology Services team. The System Administrator will be responsible for the management, maintenance, and optimization of university IT systems, ensuring reliable and secure operations across a diverse technology environment. This role involves working with Windows and Linux operating systems, administering Office 365, and supporting an enterprise-level network that serves students, faculty, and staff. Higher education experience is a plus, and the ideal candidate will bring 3-5 years of system administration experience in an enterprise network setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and experience in managing of modern Windows operating systems, Active Directory, Windows security processes, Office 365, MS SQL, backup & restore methodology.
Ability to participate in after hours on call rotation.
Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with a proven ability to identify issues, evaluate solutions, and implement effective strategies to drive optimal outcomes.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to organize and convey complex ideas and technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously without compromising quality or accuracy.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately manage and analyze large volumes of data, ensuring precision and consistency.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively, contributing to team goals while taking initiative and managing tasks autonomously when appropriate.
Strong understanding of network protocols, security practices, and system troubleshooting.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Effective communication skills to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
3-5 years of system administration experience working in an enterprise environment
Proficiency in managing modern Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
Hands-on experience with Office 365 administration, including Exchange Online, Teams, and SharePoint.
Experience in managing network services including DHCP, DNS, Windows, and Entra directory services.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in a higher education IT environment.
Familiarity with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, CompTIA Linux+, or similar.
Experience with scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) for automation tasks.
