The Security Analyst I works in day-to-day operations of the security solutions utilized by the institution to identify, investigate, and remediate threats to SIU. The individual is also involved in keeping up to date on the latest security trends as well as threats, and tactics that could be used to compromise systems or the SIU community. This position assists with the development and implementation of University security policies, plans, guidelines, and procedures to meet these goals. In addition to security operations, this position may be responsible for implementing and/or upkeep of information security tooling.
Examples of Duties
Develops, programs, and maintains computer and database systems to regularly monitor
logs and security alerts from a variety of campus computing sources and analyze the resulting
data to discover security issues, develop proactive assessment automation, and make
security recommendations. Monitor the University email system for scam/spam email and
other fraudulent activity.
Performs computer (forensics in some cases), network, and other research, to analyze
malicious activity, to assist with police cases, legal e-discovery, and possible breaches of
sensitive information.
Assists with the development of technical documentation, including University security policies, plans, guidelines, forms, and procedures.
Member of the Identity and Access Management team responsible for security related functions, including addition, changing and deletion of accounts and services used by the University.
This position will require working at a computer for extended periods of time. Good typing
skills are essential. This position will require working in team situations and in close
proximity with other individuals. This position will require occasional extended working
periods during the evening and on weekends to resolve problems and in some cases these
extended work periods may be up to 24 hours in duration.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Any one or any combination totaling one (1) year (12 months) from the following categories:
A. College coursework which includes Information Systems Technologies (IST), Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a closely related discipline, including coursework in security and/or networking, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. Work experience in network infrastructure, remote access systems, Internet connectivity and support services.
