Summary of Position:
The Diezmann lab (https://lvdlab.org) at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities is seeking a highly motivated Researcher to support laboratory operations and conduct experiments on how meiotic chromosomes regulate DNA repair in the developing germ cells of the model organism C. elegans. Primary skills used in this project include engineering and maintaining transgenic worm strains, high-resolution microscopy, and quantitative data analysis. This position offers active mentoring from the principal investigator and other labmembers as well as opportunities to publish and present experimental results, making it ideal for applicants seeking independent research experience before graduate school or other scientific careers.
About our Lab:
The Diezmann lab works to understand how biological information emerges from random molecular dynamics. We use single-molecule microscopy and genome engineering to study how meiotic recombination ensures the faithful transmission of genetic material while creating genetic diversity in each generation. In 2024, we addressed this century-old debate by demonstrating that protein diffusion can transduce signals along meiotic chromosomes. Our lab values mutual support, technical mastery, and critical reasoning, and our work supports advances in human reproductive health, crop breeding, and diseases of DNA repair such as cancer.
Essential and Other Functions:
Research / Experimentation 75%
Design genetic constructs, perform established techniques for genetic and physical manipulation of C. elegans, molecular biology and cloning. Characterize strains using fluorescence microscopy, perform image and statistical data analysis. Maintain laboratory records, prepare figures, and communicate results.
Support for lab operations 25%
Prepare media and other stocks, maintain databases and protocols, receive and
organize orders, and other light organizational tasks.
Qualifications
All required qualifications must be documented in application materials.
Required/Essential Qualifications:
B.S./B.A. degree in biology, chemistry, or related fields; or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four (4) years. Experience with standard wet lab techniques such as preparation of solutions and PCR.
Preferred Qualifications:
Course or laboratory experience in genetics, biochemistry, and/or cellular biology. Experience/familiarity with C. elegans, fluorescence microscopy, and/or CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering techniques. Experience with Matlab, R, Python or other data analysis software. Organizational skills related to task and inventory management.
