  • Position Duties
    The employee will assist primarily with data analyses to support the Eidam Research Lab in Corvallis, OR (OSU Campus). The research team led by Dr. Eidam studies sediment transport processes and deposition through fluvial and coastal environments using diverse tools.

    The main projects related to this role are a satellite calibration project and seabed mapping project. Duties may include:
    Analyzing and classifying bathymetry data for landform types
    Creating figures in Matlab and/or Python
    Creating brief reports about processing methods and results of analyses
    Reviewing, selecting, and downloading satellite data segments according to specific data quality parameters
    Analyzing satellite data segments using pre-built Matlab code
    Processing laboratory sediment samples
    Building, testing, and calibrating optical sensors in the lab

    Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
    Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
    Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

    *International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
    Additional Required Qualifications
    Demonstrated proficiency in Matlab and/or Python
    Experience interpreting mulitbeam bathymetry data
    Ability to work well independently and interface with a team of scientists
    Ability to proactively maintain regular communication with supervisor about completed tasks, upcoming tasks, and troubleshooting needs
    Strong work ethic including strong time management and time-tracking/time-reporting skills
    Strong attention to detail and organization skills (especially with data management)
    Strong written communication and documentation skills
    Proficiency in written and spoken English
    Ability to self-help/troubleshoot coding issues (e.g., by watching online help videos, using online search engines, using campus resources, etc.) and ability to ask for help when stuck

    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
    Preferred (Special) Qualifications
    Pursuing an undergraduate degree in earth science or related field
    Knowledge of MS Excel, GitHub, and/or Google Earth Engine
