    A multidisciplinary postdoctoral scientist position is available at The George Washington University in Washington DC in the area of autonomic neuroscience and cardiovascular disease. The postdoctoral scientist will work on joint collaborative projects with Dr. David Mendelowitz in the GW Department of Pharmacology and Physiology and Dr. Matthew Kay in the GW Department of Biomedical Engineering. The position is funded by NIH research grants that support comprehensive investigations of cardiovascular disease including myocardial infarction, heart failure, and sleep apnea; with a primary focus on understanding the interplay between the autonomic nervous system and heart disease to identify novel neural therapies. Studies will incorporate multi-scale experiments that involve in-vivo whole animal, ex-vivo perfused tissue, and single cell assessments. The postdoctoral scientist will have unique opportunities to learn and apply cutting-edge experimental methods that include chemogenetics, optogenetics, patch clamp electrophysiology, confocal and electron microscopy, ex-vivo perfused heart studies, cardiac optical mapping, and whole animal telemetry, plethysmography, and treadmill assessments.

    The postdoctoral scientist will conduct in-vivo and ex-vivo rodent experiments in several research projects that include topics in myocardial infarction, heart failure, sleep apnea, and the modulation of cardiac function by the autonomic nervous system. Studies could involve aspects of chemogenetics, optogenetics, patch clamp electrophysiology, confocal and electron microscopy, ex-vivo perfused heart studies, optical mapping of fluorescent probes, histology, Western blotting, qPCR, and small animal telemetry, plethysmography, and treadmill experiments. The postdoctoral scientist will be expected to design and conduct experiments, analyze data, prepare figures, and submit manuscripts for publication. Assisting in grant submission, primarily by providing pilot data, will be expected. Some lab management duties will be required, and supervision of graduate and undergraduate student researchers is expected.

    Job duties:
    · Design and conduct in-vivo and ex-vivo neurocardiac experiments that include, but are not limited to patch clamp electrophysiology, confocal and electron microscopy, ex-vivo perfused heart and brain slice studies, optical mapping of fluorescence probes, histology, Western blotting, qPCR, and small animal telemetry, plethysmography, and treadmill experiments.
    · Troubleshoot experiments, develop technical solutions to solve experimental problems, and execute experiments largely independently.
    · Process, analyze, and interpret experimental data, generate figures for publication, prepare written reports, and submit manuscripts to scientific journals.
    · Assist with laboratory management and organization, assist in ordering of laboratory supplies and reagents, supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
    · Small animal echocardiography, electrocardiography, and survival surgery, as needed.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Candidates must have a PhD degree at the time of appointment. A background in autonomic neuroscience, cardiovascular science, biomedical engineering, or exercise physiology would be very useful. An ideal candidate will have strong quantitative skills and adequate knowledge in one or several of the following areas: neural electrophysiology (including the brainstem), cardiac physiology (including electromechanical function), and animal models of cardiac disease. In addition, an ideal candidate is expected to have strong background in at least one of the following: 1) molecular biology techniques, plasmids, viral vectors, gene delivery; 2) small animal surgery; 3) patch clamp; 4) perfused tissue electrophysiology experiments; 5) echocardiography; 6) electrocardiography; and 7) statistical analysis of experimental data. It is essential that a candidate possess a natural aptitude for problem solving, is highly motivated and willing to learn new skills, and can work with and assist all members of a multidisciplinary team. Evidence of good writing skills and an appropriate publication record during the PhD studies is a plus.
