  • A recent report comes more as a shock to many in the country, especially the higher education administrators. According to the report, University of Phoenix is spending a whopping $400,000 on marketing. To make matters worse, the university is spending this amount on a daily basis.

The report also states that the university seems to be the best client for Google at the moment. With so much money spent on advertising, it is natural that students are going to be asked for a higher tuition fee. This report has come out at a critical time when most of the higher education administrators are asking colleges and universities around the country to cut down on costs in order to bring the tuition fee under control.

It is natural for a for-profit university to spend on advertising but an amount of $400,000 on daily basis seems to be outrageous. A number of administrators and even former deans are not able to digest the facts that have come out in the report. Other for-profit universities in the country also spend on advertising, but none of them are spending a fortune like the University of Phoenix .

Our higher education system is already under the scanner at the moment. Not enough funds are coming from the government and hence public colleges are not been able to attract too many students. Most of the people believe that the quality of education in public colleges is not good enough anymore. Hence, most of them are left with no other option but to get enrolled in a for-profit university which is basically privately managed. However, many of the students and their families are not able to cope up with the growing tuition fees.

Ultimately, it is the country that is suffering due to this entire scenario. The number of graduates on a yearly basis is decreasing rapidly, leaving the economy helpless in many regards. Due to this, the job opportunities are also getting impacted. The last thing America wants at the moment is the higher education system to detoriate further.

The only way of reducing the tuition fee is to get the operational costs down. However, an university which is spending $400,000 on advertising on a daily basis will never be able to reduce the fee, which further means that students who fall to low income groups will never be a part of such a university.

The report further revealed that even the top most Multi National Companies around the world are not willing to spend such an amount on marketing and advertising, further raising many eyebrows across the country. Unfortunately, this development has taken place at a time when the entire nation is looking for some positive initiatives to be taken in order to improve the overall condition of higher education system. The time has arrived for the Obama administration to start taking some serious steps and actions.
