  • Going to a good educational institution is a dream for all of us. Most of us think that the name of the education will add weight to our skills. This does hold true in many cases. For example, the University of Harvard, which is a place that most students would give anything for. And being such a big name, Harvard has to make sure; it lives up to all the expectation. Else students will always seek somewhere different to go. Of course institutes like Harvard need not worry!

Similarly, imagine yourself earning a scholarship.  Scholarships are offered in most schools and colleges in the academic field. We have heard of scholarships in the sports field as well. These are awarded to students who are really good in what they do; playing basketball, baseball and even chess. Playing sports and participating in curricular activities is encouraged amongst students as this adds to their resumes and also to the colleges’ name.

But recently, a scholarship was awarded to two high school students for doing what they were best at; bass fishing. It is said that these youngsters have their goals set which are earning good grades and getting better at catching fish! Both are students from the Bethel University and it was the university that offered them seats so that they could win the athletics scholarship from the university and continue to compete professionally in future. It opens a whole new path for the students. They get help in academics plus the sport they play best.

In the recent times, bass fishing as a sport has risen tremendously. And there are about 220 bass fishing clubs across colleges in America and Canada. One such competition caught the authorities at Bethel’s attention which took place at Tennessee.

The sport is quite famous and when tournaments are held, it is covered by ESPN and has a famous website as well. Because the sport is famous and there is a lot of talent out there, the University decided to give two candidates a chance of winning a scholarship through them. Also playing the sport and scoring well in college will help the recruitment scene for the University.

Due to the popularity of the sport and the players, major companies will see Bethel University in a different light now. Therefore, keeping the budgets in mind the college has a new team built for bass fishing and has hired a good coach as well. The scholarships given out to students range from $ 1,000 to $ 4,000 each year. Having students who are good in sports and good students is a good advantage for the college.

Many colleges offer such scholarships and frankly, it does a whole lot of good to the students. It shows that the colleges are interested in more than just academics and help students do better in fields they are interested in. It helps in the overall development of the students as well.
