  • There are many public schools in Manhattan that are facing a lot of code violations. This issue is not something that has crept up recently but there are many cases that have gone unresolved since several years. This is a very delicate and serious issue because it threatens the safety of the students as well as the teachers.

Even parents feel uncomfortable sending their kids to school. A school is where students and teachers meet to gain knowledge. Safety is of paramount importance and every educational institution must ensure this. A report released recently has affirmed that the agency responsible for building safety has been attacked by various charges such as corruption, mismanagement and inefficiency.

The study found so many open violations at many public hospitals and it was also estimated that a lot of buildings in Manhattan have one open case of violation against them. Even if the problem has been rectified it is still counted as a violation if the fine is not paid or if the required amount of paper work is not complete.

A sample of almost 2200 violations had been opened and it was found that they remained open for almost 2000 days which is approximately 5 years. This also affirmed that the fines were not paid which almost totaled up to $60 million.

The President of Manhattan says that the city is in the middle of a crisis and something needs to be done to rectify this problem. The report made against this situation was limited only to Manhattan and this report did not mention the failures of the Department of Education and the School Construction Authority.

Their failures included maintenance of property and overcoming the deficiencies. One school building in Manhattan had about 15 violations dating back to the year 2006. These problems include dysfunctional ventilators and blocked exit doors. The interior structure was also developing cracks.

Such problems exist in many schools in Manhattan causing a lot of problems. One of the buildings of an intermediate school had as many as 26 violations but these were not considered very serious. The director of this school who has taken charge just a year back says she did not receive any complaints regarding the infrastructure.

Higher authorities claim that their schools are safe and that they continue taking appropriate measures to correct such problems but reality is however different. One school that teaches small children has 10 open violations out of which 6 are extremely serious.

The school has almost 6 feet long cracks and the skylight has been leaking over the elevator. These violations have been cited over a period of years and no one has paid attention to them. It is the safety of students and teachers in question here which has not been given much importance.

The common problem faced by schools and buildings under the violation is funds. They all claim to have insufficient funds. One report says that the Mayor has been taking steps to address this situation and find a solution.
