  • This is not the best year to graduate in case you have not noticed. According to a Reuters report, many thousands of graduates across the nation will not be able to find jobs in their field or any other field for that matter. Seniors from any discipline from any university will have a disappointing outlook in the employment arena this spring and summer.

This year’s graduates will continue to have competition from the unemployed who have been out looking for any sort of job for the past year, as well as graduates from former years. They are also looking for jobs as well as retirees who find themselves in a financial scramble since losing their savings in the stock market crash.

This year there will be about 1.6 million college degrees awarded and many students have dreams of going out and getting jobs in order to pay back their student loans which have averaged out to $22,500. This just is not going to happen. We are the graduates who had big hopes which are being quelled and we are helpless to do much about it.

Emotional and physical illnesses are becoming more noticeable in the student body as students tend to worry and become more anxious about their future. They are also worried about their medical coverage because once you leave school, you are no longer covered by your parent’s plan. However, about 20 states have passed new laws making it possible for a graduate to remain under their parent’s coverage until they reach their mid 20s. That is a blessing for some!

Many others have to face the basic truth and move back in with their parents. This is a double whammy as many parents now in their fifties and sixties have lost their jobs, have eaten through their own savings and took out loans for their children’s education. How can they take back their children and keep them indefinitely? But it has to be done!
