Any proud institution of higher learning holds fast to free expression and free association in the face of popular opposition. Columbia University has often shown that the principle is among its core values.

But not where the U.S. military is concerned.

Columbia is on the verge of deciding whether to invite the ROTC program back onto campus after a 42-year hiatus. The impetus for such a move is the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" restrictions on gays in the service.
