  • Job Summary
    Under the direction of the Director of the Cleanroom Research Laboratory, the Engineering Technician will perform equipment preventative maintenance & repairs, equipment improvements, equipment upgrades, and equipment installation. The Engineering Technician will work with other Cleanroom staff to support the daily operation and maintenance of the laboratory. The candidate will be responsible for supporting and troubleshooting instrument issues related to metal e-beam evaporators, sputtering systems and other semiconductor equipment as needed. The candidate will also be assisting in interactions with Students, Faculty and Research Scientists to identify Cleanroom capability requirements to support ongoing and future research projects.
    Minimum Education and Experience
    Bachelor’s degree and one year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Minimum A.A.S. degree in Engineering, Trade, or other technical discipline and or related experience.
    A minimum of four (4) years of experience in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of semiconductor equipment.

    Required Skills
    Practical knowledge and application of electronics, mechanics, vacuum theory, math and computers
    Knowledge of basic computer skills and software programs.
    Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and ability to learn the operational concepts of systems and how to perform diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques to solve more complex operational and system problems.
    Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, flow charts and cause and effect diagrams.
    Must be detail oriented, effective communication skills, self-motivated, self-starter, and ability to work independently and with team.
    Must be detail oriented, a problem solver as well as a decision maker.
    Proficient with Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
    Other Qualifications
    To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    Take ownership and support operation and maintenance of various metal e-beam evaporators, sputtering systems, and other equipment as assigned.
    Perform equipment preventative maintenance & repairs, equipment upgrades, and equipment installation.
    Improve equipment/system performance to achieve process requirements and eliminate repetitive downtime.
    Monitor and analyze all related data to improve and maintain tool performance and address all tool related issues.
    Coordinate with supplier/vendors for service and repairs, University facilities team as needed.
    Train internal and external users on e-beam metal equipment as needed.
    Willing to be a back-up owner of tools as assigned.
    Work with process engineers to establish SOPs.
    Create instrument operation manual as needed to help users navigate complex instruments.
    Assist in start-up of new tools and other activities as need to sustain operation of Cleanroom.
    Adhere to, support and implement policies set forth by University safety and compliance team.

    Work in a class 10000 Cleanroom for extended periods
    Wear full Cleanroom attire (smock, boots, gloves, safety glasses, masks)
    Work with and/or around chemicals (solids, liquids and gases)
    Be available for pre-planned staggered shifts (7am-4pm/noon-9 pm) as needed.
    Stand for up to 8 hours at a time
    Lift up to 31-50 pounds
    Push/Pull up to 100+ pounds
