Primary Purpose of Department
The School of Professional Studies (SPS) reports to the division of Academic Affairs, under the leadership of the Associate Provost. The School of Professional Studies works collaboratively with departments, colleges, and academic support units to ensure integrated partnerships for enrollment growth, student success, and faculty effectiveness in teaching.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Instructional Designer/Technologist I manages instructional innovation projects and course redesign initiatives from initiation through design and development and implementation. In addition, this role is largely involved in the foundational setting, growth, and implementation of AI Across the Curriculum through faculty development initiatives at large. These projects are mission critical and directly related to student success in areas of high need to shorten time to degree and reduce DFW rates. This essential position will collaborate with faculty and other instructional staff in building instructional design and faculty development projects for the university, including the consultancy, design, development of content, curriculum structure, and instructional technique, and faculty support.
The position provides project oversight and coordination across multiple departments and units, including faculty, other instructional designers/technologists, stakeholders from leadership in partner units at the university, graduate assistants, working as a team for consulting, design, development of innovation projects. Instructional in nature, these duties are associated with the regular academic and educational experiences provided by the university, are uniquely supportive of those academic and educational experiences, and involve significant and independent interaction with participants in the university’s instructional and educational program.
This role is an Instructional Design and Technology position to plan, design, and implement academic technology and/or innovative approaches that directly support faculty effectiveness in instructional design and delivery for student success. This position requires an advanced degree in a teaching or instructional design related field. Given the need to continually advance and promote the use of mixed teaching methodologies that incorporate the use of technology to not only enhance traditional classroom-based instruction but also broaden the basis for online and blended/hybrid courses, this position involves engaging with faculty, departments, and partner units across the university in multiple ways for course consulting, design, delivery, implementation, and evaluation.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Instructional Designer/Technologist position is a situated role for digital innovation and strategic projects in teaching and learning.
The position includes functions on:
Curriculum consultancy, design, development, implementation and support
Institutional and faculty professional development
Instructional systems/technology support
Project management, documentation, and reporting.
As such, the position requires significant project management skills for strategic instructional initiatives, architecting the use and support of instructional technology, and acting as pedagogical consultant for learning innovation, particularly with AI, microcredentials, innovation in development, and other approaches for faculty and student success.
The ID/T position also requires skills in consultation, support, and training for technology-based instructional systems as well as providing expertise in the use of academic technologies, instructional design, and best practices in teaching and learning. This will include planning, implementing, promoting, managing and evaluating the changes associated with learning environments and instructional systems. The position requires that a substantial proportion of the work commitment is devoted to instructional activities and the direction of educational/academic supportive activities for student success.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in Instructional Systems Technology, Instructional Design & Technology, Learning Design & Technology, Teaching/Learning, or a closely related field.
1-2 years work experience in faculty development, instructional design, or course development.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Strong experience with Instructional design, course development, and/or teaching in higher education with strong knowledge of instructional systems design (ISD) methods, online course development, instructional strategies and methodologies, instructional technologies, media selection/design, needs analysis, learning theory, SOTL and accessibility standards.
Experience with instructional technologies including AI, online learning technologies, adaptive systems, micro credentials, educational analytics tools, data dashboards, project management tools, vendor tool configurations, and LTIs.
Experience managing instructional projects, including faculty and college collaborations
Experience with website design/development, event marketing, and media communications for faculty development programs
Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills, both written and oral, with confidence in leading instructional workshops, training, or consultations, providing and receiving constructive feedback and to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
