The Opportunity and Job Description
P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School (DRS) is seeking to hire a Band Director / Music Instructor for the 2026-2027 school year. Responsibilities include the following:
Direct teaching of assigned students.
Taylor curriculum for a 5-12 experience, including selecting rigorous and developmentally appropriate music and materials for assigned courses
Motivate students and successfully employ effective teaching methods to create a safe and engaging learning environment
Recruit & retain students for the band program
Plan and collaborate with the P.K. Yonge Performing Arts teaching faculty to provide an integrated, comprehensive, and sequential K-12 curriculum experience
Identify, organize, and program extracurricular and community performances for assigned groups, including preparing students for events such as marching band competitions, symphonic band performance adjudications, and solo & ensemble festivals
Lead and supervise rehearsals for special programs
Recruit and manage marching band support staff
Encourage and assist students with auditions, competitions, festivals, solos, all-state ensembles, and college scholarships
Assume responsibility for planning (i.e., registration, transportation, lodging, meals, chaperones) and accompanying students to school-sponsored events and competitions; monitor and manage student behavior
Assist with musical direction for school productions including pep rallies, high school graduation, football games, and other special events and celebrations
Communicate effectively with administrators, parents, and colleagues regarding scheduling, upcoming performances/events, and students’ academic progress
Manage annual instrument inventory, assignment, and the care & maintenance of instruments and equipment in the performing arts facility
Maintain orderly classroom, storage areas and shared Performing Arts Center spaces
Provide leadership and direction for the Band Parents Association dedicated to supporting the P.K. Yonge Marching Band Program
Manage the band budget, including creating an annual budget, leading fundraising efforts, and tracking spending and donations to support the marching band
Participate in appropriate professional organizations
Utilize a standards-based system to communicate clear and unbiased student grades
Demonstrate and model professional behavior as ambassadors of P.K. Yonge
Administer and analyze formative assessments to monitor student progress and plan instructional shifts to increase achievement and success for all students.
Design appropriate curriculum, instructional, and assessment accommodations to support academic success for all students including both striving and advanced learners.
Incorporate effective and innovative uses of technology to support teaching, learning and collaboration.
Maintain regular parent communication (electronically, face-to-face and conferences).
Participate in practitioner inquiry (research) to support professional learning and inform continuous program improvement.
Commit to continuous professional learning and ongoing reflection on effectiveness of teaching practice and implemented curricula for all students.

Minimum Requirements:
A Master’s degree; candidates with Bachelor’s degree will be considered, but will be required to obtain a Master’s degree within three years of hire.
Florida teaching certification; Subject area certification
Excellent oral and written communication skills
