Job Description:
The Office of Financial Aid aims to offer the highest level of customer service while providing a positive, supportive work environment with an emphasis on teamwork. Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid, the Assistant Director manages the operations for the Financial Aid Programs, oversees quality of the needs analysis process, safeguards seamless distribution of federal and institutional grant and loan aid, assists with the development of school-wide standards and procedures for the processing of aid application material, and oversees routine annual updates of department website.
The Assistant Director will coordinate the delivery of financial services for the MD and master’s student body. This entails 100% verification and review of ½ the MD population with an all-hands-on deck team-approach to counseling. The incoming class size of the MD students is 144 students each year and over 600 students’ total. The Assistant Director assists in the administration federal and institutional student financial aid programs, second to the director, in assuring the smooth operation and delivery of a cohesive, compliant, high-quality aid program for medical students. Primary responsibilities include determining need and aid offers for medical students, counseling MD students regarding all aspects of aid decisions, from scholarship eligibility to the process of loan repayment.
The Assistant Director will collaborate with key offices, including the University Loan Office, the Office of the Bursar and Registrar, Admissions and Student Affairs, to ensure advocacy of MD student issues and concerns. Work with the director in strategic planning and analyzing financial aid trends and initiatives ultimately to present an aid policy and tuition recommendations each year to the AMS leadership. The Assistant Director administers the financial aid for the Gateway program, currently a population of approximately 40 students.
The Assistant Director participates in financial aid organizations (AAMC COSFA, NASFAA, EASFAA) that are vital to keep abreast of the ever-changing aid landscape.
Job Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree required with a minimum of 3 years of related financial aid experience. Financial Aid counseling experience strongly preferred.
Experience utilizing computer systems as well as skills with various applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Federal EDE, Banner, eg.) preferred
And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Job Competencies
Understanding of federal regulations that govern policy and delivery of aid, particularly as they relate to graduate/professional school students.
Must be able to work independently and be motivated to assist students and their families in understanding the financial aid process and financing options at AMS.
Must be able to communicate effectively using interpersonal, written, and public speaking skills.
Proven leadership ability and excellent interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written) in order to consult with applicants and students, parents, University staff and leadership, and other constituencies.
Excellent organizational skills needed for meticulous record-keeping and adherence to deadlines.
Ability to make sound, independent decisions on all procedures and policies.
