    The Department of Mathematics at UW-Madison is seeking a Learning Center Specialist to join our Math Learning Center team. One of the largest on campus, Mathematics is home to nearly 400 workers including faculty, academic staff, university staff, pre- and postdoctoral trainees; as well as graduate and undergraduate student employees. Each year, the MLC provides support to thousands of undergraduate students taking mathematics courses through a variety of programs and services. This position offers a dynamic and collaborative work environment with a broad range of challenging and varied responsibilities such as overseeing two of the MLC support programs, teaching math content in a small group setting, providing training and professional development programming for tutors, and contributing to our development of instructional math content.

    The Math Learning Center Specialist will assist with the day-to-day operations of the Math Learning Center, helping to create a welcoming and inclusive community for all students. They will take a leadership role in the coordination of our small group tutoring program and our summer programming. They will teach, tutor, and develop content ranging from pre-algebra to multivariate calculus. The MLC Specialist will have the opportunity to create and implement a training program for undergraduate small group leaders and to assist the MLC Director with the expansion of our existing professional development program for all tutors.

    Additional responsibilities will include assisting with tutor hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations; attending campus outreach events; helping to market MLC programming; and working with the MLC Director to conduct program assessment. The MLC Specialist will also engage in ongoing professional development to build their skills to support students and create an inclusive community.

    This role requires considerable professionalism, confidentiality, independent initiative, sound judgement, analytic ability, and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to manage competing priorities, will be able to work as part of a team, and will have the ability to work independently in dealing with a diverse workload with frequent interruptions and varied responsibilities. This position may include occasional evening or weekend hours.

    Responsibilities:
    Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory course(s), and assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning and promote high-impact practices.
    15% Works to develop and/or design curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction within that discipline
    5% Assesses learner performance and may prepare reports recommending instructional improvements
    20% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of said instructional techniques
    30% Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory courses in a variety of formats such as one-on-one sessions, group sessions, peer mentor sessions, and seminars
    5% Meets with students for intake and general assessment and makes referrals to others on campus as appropriate
    10% May supervise the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support
    15% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
