    The Structural Engineer, Planning and Facilities Management / Office of Engineering and Utilities provides engineering analysis, recommendation, and subject matter expertise services on multi-discipline building projects of small to large scope, as well as single discipline structural and building envelope engineering projects. They will ensure proper management and oversight of the facilities and building systems and relevant partnerships for reliable & cost-effective maintenance and upkeep of building and civil systems. They will manage the structural and building envelope deferred maintenance buckets and programs which have complex features, from the concept stage through the development of construction documents or program implementation. They shall develop engineering solutions and implement necessary programs for corrective action, historic preservation, and code compliance. The position will also perform special project activities requiring application of technical expertise to the development of solutions to unusually difficult problems as assigned.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    Lead and support project development and perform design/construction project reviews for compliance with GU Standards and incorporation of best practices for building envelope, structural, and historic preservation.

    Identify and correct deficiencies to optimize building envelope performance and building structural and architectural elements are well-maintained.

    Train and inform maintenance staff on best practices regarding structural and building envelope design and maintenance.

    Develop, enhance, and track preventive maintenance to support envelope performance, structural integrity, and historic preservation.

    Assess building inventory and associated systems to develop capital plans to correct deficiencies and oversee the implementation of discipline specific projects and programs

    Create and maintain design standards and specifications related to building envelope, structural, and architectural divisions as relevant.

    Work Interactions

    This position works with the Office of Engineering and Utilities, Capital Projects, Facilitates Operations, and building end-users to complete tasks. The position shall be directed by the Engineering and Utilities Leadership to complete studies, support projects, implement new process and procedures, and investigate issues with the support of the engineering team. The position shall work with Facilities Maintenance as a consultative resource to solve issues and improve operations while providing lateral direction to improve system performance within roofing, carpentry, and other relevant activities. The position shall work with Capital Projects to review project plans to ensure building envelope and structural considerations are met and design standards are included in the design and specifications. The position will also work with end-users to inform them of potential changes and resolve issues related to structural, building envelope, historic preservation, and civil disciplines.

    Requirements and Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in structural, civil engineering, or related (applicable) discipline and/or equivalent combination

    Knowledge of structural and building envelope systems on a variety of building types and ages

    Professional passion in high performing buildings, sustainability, and historic preservation

    The ability to direct and guide a group or team through task completion to attain goals

    Excellent customer service skills and ability to work effectively with various personality types

    Strong listener that can tactfully express ideas or opinions to resolve issues and maintain professional working relationships in difficult situations related to budget and scope priorities on campus.

    Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and ability to produce results independently. A high attention to detail and accuracy

    Knowledge of engineering economic evaluation methods to conduct cost benefit analysis prioritizing program measures and total project budgets

    Familiar with design & construction guidelines creating standards for relevant disciplines

    8+ years of progressive experience as an engineer in operations, design, maintenance, or construction

    Licensure: Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE)

    Registered as a CEM (Certified Energy Manager), ASHRAE Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Accreditation as a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Associate, LEED Accredited Professional

    Experience with historic buildings, campus level evaluations, program management, project engineering, project management
