    Job Description Summary
    The University of South Alabama’s Office of Research and Economic Development is seeking to hire an Assistant Vice President, Sponsored Projects Administration. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
    Essential Functions

    Essential Functions
    The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) is responsible for providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight of all sponsored research activities at the University of South Alabama. This position plays a decisive role in advancing the University’s research and scholarly initiatives, providing pre-and post-award, non-financial oversight for externally-sponsored projects, and ensuring compliance with sponsor regulations and policies. The AVP will assist the institution in minimizing compliance risk related to sponsored research activities by implementing sound business management practices related to all aspects of pre-award management, and serving as the technical expert on grant and contract pre-award issues. The AVP will identify service areas and processes that will enhance service, monitor with appropriate metrics and evaluation techniques, assess performance over time, and improve and redesign processes based on the evaluation. The AVP will have the ability to innovate when faced with new challenge, engaging problem-solving skills to implement a creative solution that will not compromise policies or rules. the AVP will ensure that contact negotiations with industry are carried out in a framework that reduces barriers to collaboration. The AVP will ensure close coordination federal state, and non-profit sponsors in the submission and management of awards.

    Strategic Leadership:
    Develops and executes a strategic vision for sponsored projects that aligns with the University’s research goals and mission.
    Authorization and Submission:
    Provides oversight for the submission of all proposals seeking external funding, ensuring sponsor requirements and deadlines.
    Provides guidance and support to faculty investigators in proposal development, budgeting, and sponsor guidance.
    Develops and facilitates execution for any documents associated with sponsored projects, including but not limited to sub-agreements, loaned equipment agreements, and collaboration documents.
    Electronic Research Administration:
    Acts as campus “owner” of the Cayuse suite to assure best use of this electronic research administration platform.
    Maintains involvement in user groups and commercially-driven events to assure most current knowledge of system upgrades, future enhancements, and events that will impact the University’s system.
    Sponsor Communication:
    Acts as point of contact for exchanges and discussions involving external sponsors, including federal agencies, private foundations, and industry partners, in matters pertaining to proposal submission, award and agreement development and negotiation, and non-financial compliance.
    Compliance and Regulations:
    Ensures compliance with federal, state, and university policies and regulations related to sponsored programs.
    Stays current with changes in research regulations and requirements and advocate for best practices.
    Staff Management and Development:
    Supervises and mentors a team of professionals responsible for sponsored project administration.
    Provides training and professional development opportunities for SPA staff.
    Reporting and Evaluation:
    Annually provides reports and metrics related to sponsored project activity from the past fiscal year.
    Evaluates the effectiveness of sponsored program practices and recommend improvements as necessary.
    Collaboration and Outreach:
    Collaborates with other University departments and units to facilitate best practices in research administration.
    Represents the University at relevant conferences and meetings, including thought leadership and involvement in professional organizations.
