    Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) is seeking a Lab and IT Technician to join a team providing a range of technical support to more than 100 PhD students, 40+ faculty and 20+ staff. The position reports to the Lab Manager with additional direction from the IT Manager, faculty Lab Director and Department Administrator. You will share expertise, resources and responsibilities with the team as well as with other technical professionals throughout the College of Engineering.

    The successful candidate will excel at working with faculty, staff, postdocs, and visitors with strong customer service skills as well as significant knowledge of safety requirements to ensure safety within the labs and classrooms throughout the department (GG Brown and EWRE buildings). We are seeking someone who is passionate about empowering others to be successful, with an excitement for new programs or challenges, both related to the laboratory services and IT. You will be a collaborative member of the team, providing an inviting and safe approach to research, education and IT computing.

    Responsibilities*
    Lab Operations & Safety Management - 30%

    Assist in overseeing operations in the Structures Laboratory to ensure safety compliance while supporting students, faculty and staff with research endeavors (testing, purchasing, equipment maintenance and repair). To facilitate this responsibility, the hire will be physically located in an office within the Structures Lab.
    Collaborate with the college's facilities management office and relevant departments (e.g., Environment, Health & Safety [EHS], UM Facilities & Operations, and other facilities managers) on safety and facility-related issues, including fire drills, inclement weather drills, and building repairs or renovations.
    Participate in the annual departmental walk-through to identify and prioritize issues for the coming year and forecast future equipment needs.
    Assist the technical team in training new laboratory users on lab-specific safety procedures, document their training, and maintain a record of personnel authorized to use lab facilities and equipment.
    Perform maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment as necessary and manage the lab's computing infrastructure.
    Customer Support - 30%

    Oversee the check-in and check-out process for researchers in the lab, ensuring proper use and cleanliness of equipment.
    Collaborate with other technicians to set up lab tests, providing the necessary equipment and supplies. Guide and assist researchers in conducting laboratory tests, as well as in identifying and purchasing materials or components needed for their work.
    Provide end-user support across various IT areas, addressing issues related to software, hardware, network, and equipment.
    Offer technical support for Windows, Mac systems, printing, and mobile devices. Conduct training sessions on productivity and collaboration tools to enhance user capabilities.
    Assist with the selection and procurement of hardware and software. Facilitate the onboarding process for faculty, staff, and visitors, ensuring a smooth transition into the organization's technological environment.
    Desktop Support - 20%

    Install and set up new computer hardware and software.
    Reload existing systems and prepare new ones using provided operating system images.
    Manage software updates and troubleshoot hardware, software, security, and network issues.
    Coordinate computer and printer repairs and support audiovisual and conference collaboration equipment.
    Documentation and Communication - 10%

    Use the departmental ticketing system to coordinate and communicate regarding support requests.
    Maintain documentation and produce reports as required by supervisor or higher-level authority.
    Manage online resources, including departmental email groups and room scheduling calendars, and maintain inventories of computer hardware, software, and supplies.
    Server and System Administration - 5%

    Manage computer and user objects in Active Directory.
    Administer cloud-based computing environments and services.
    Provide remote server administration and maintenance.
    IT Security Management - 5%

    Ensure security patches and updates are applied to managed computers and applications in a timely manner.
    Coordinate incident response activities with campus IT security staff.
    Ensure adherence to university IT security policies and protocols.
    Required Qualifications*
    Associate's degree in an engineering, science, or technology field
    A minimum of 3 years of experience administering computers running multiple recent/current versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system in an Active Directory environment
    Minimum of 3 years of experience administering computers running multiple recent/current versions of the MacOS X operating system
    Demonstrated experience troubleshooting desktop productivity software issues, network connection errors, and desktop and network printing problems
    Demonstrated customer service experience, preferably in a lab and/or IT setting
    Exceptional collaboration and communication skills
    Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
    Must quality as a U.S. Citizen as defined by U.S. government regulations for export control data such as ITAR and EAR
    Must be able to work during normal business hours with occasional work outside of normal business hours for planned upgrades and best-effort response to major outages
    Demonstrated ability to work independently, efficiently and productively as well with a team that would include a diverse group of students, staff and faculty
    Ability to implement customer service skills in conjunction with safety requirements to provide an inclusive, inviting research atmosphere
    Demonstrated communication skills, including active listening, difficult conversations and collaborative spirit
    Experience operating hand and power tools and laboratory instruments
    Ability to respond to, as well as provide, constructive feedback for continual improvement
    Desired Qualifications*
    Bachelor's degree in an engineering, science, or technology field
    Knowledge of U-M EHS requirements and standards
    Knowledgeable or U-M policies and procedures, resources (e.g., Wilson Center, CoE Facilities Management Office, EHS)
    Operation and programming of industrial robots and PLC-based control systems
    Hand-on experience with microcontrollers or embedded systems
    Experience with use of desktop management tools to administer dozens to hundreds of computers in a single IT environment
    Experience with desktop storage and backups technologies
    Experience providing IT support in an academic environment
    Familiarity with updating web pages in HTML or through a web content management system
