    The College of Education and Human Sciences at South Dakota State University is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated faculty member poised to contribute to the special education teacher preparation program, with an interest in autism and autism spectrum disorders. Our guiding philosophy centers on the notion that we have the responsibility to create environments in which all learners can thrive, whether it be at the preK-12 level or within a university system. As such, the College ushered in additional supports available to students on campus through the creation of the Lucas P. Wintrode Autism Support Services in 2023 – with a mission to create personalized supports for students with ASD on campus (see https://www.sdstatefoundation.org/stories/wintrodes-build-full-spectrum-of-support) .

    The ideal candidate for the Lucas P. Wintrode Assistant Professor of Special Education will demonstrate a passion for teaching and a commitment to developing their research skills in this area. Responsibilities will include (a) supporting high-quality teacher preparation and graduate student learning, (b) contributing to research efforts that add to new knowledge in special education/autism, and © assisting with autism-related training opportunities and programs.

    This position is supervised by the Director of the School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development, with an anticipated start date of August 22, 2025. The role is a 9-month, in-person, tenure-track faculty position located on our main campus in Brookings, South Dakota. It is full-time and benefit eligible.

    This position requires in-person teaching in Brookings, South Dakota.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    To contribute to the SDSU strategic plan, “Pathway to Premier 2030”, the selected candidate will contribute to program development, engage in high-impact scholarship, and pursue external funding in special education that advances meeting students’ individualistic needs.
    This enthusiastic faculty leader will:
    Provide high quality classroom teaching in upper-level special education and/or special education, including courses related to specific exceptionalities including but not limited to autism and autism spectrum disorders, and/or supervise candidates in the field.
    Guide and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in their work to support individuals with exceptionalities.
    Actively engage in local, state, and regional partnerships.
    Develop an annual plan outlining goals to fulfill the objectives of this endowment, and an annual report of accomplishments.

    SALARY:
    The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, starting at $70,000, plus an additional stipend of $20,000 will be provided by the endowment. The endowment designation will be formally evaluated every 3 years to ensure high impact outcomes. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Earned doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) in Special Education or a related field completed by first day of employment.
    Ability to use interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
    Evidence of an emerging scholarship agenda in special education.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    Ability or potential to teach in a university setting through multiple modalities (in person, online, hybrid).
    Ability to develop strong collaborative partnerships among institutions of higher education, local education agencies, government agencies, mental health, and nonprofit organizations where collaboration will enhance the strengths of the College and stakeholders.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Minimum of three years special education teaching experience.
    Evidence of expertise in autism and autism related disorders.
    Record of developing and delivering academic programs in a university setting.
    Experience in, or knowledge of current, research-based methods for teaching neurodiversity, special education law, behavioral management, and assessment strategies to meet students’ individual needs.
    Ability to advance academic programs through university and institutional review processes.
    Expertise in integrating content areas in a cross-curricular approach to instruction.
