Job Description
The University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Educational Initiatives seeks applicants for an Associate Program Director of Math Education and Research. This limited term, 12-month, full-time position is located on campus at the University of Notre Dame. The position has the opportunity to renew for a second year. The Institute for Educational Initiatives works to advance Notre Dame’s commitment to the future of children and schools locally, nationally, and globally. Heeding the call to create a more just world, the Institute advances the field of education through the generation and dissemination of new knowledge while also addressing the struggles of our education system as barriers to economic prosperity and community stability. The Institute employs more than 140 individuals, including over 60 faculty fellows pursuing entrepreneurial initiatives that improve the education of the young, particularly the underserved, paying special—though not exclusive—attention to Catholic schools. Reporting to the Assistant Professor of the Practice of Elementary Mathematics, the Associate Program Director of Math Education and Research will work to strengthen the connection between research and practice for K-8 mathematics, supporting basic research in mathematical cognition while also bridging educator formation efforts with the science of learning.
The Associate Program Director will support collaborations between Notre Dame’s Master’s degree-granting ACE Teaching Fellows Program, the Center for Educational Research and Action (ERA), Tutor-ND, and community partners.
Essential Duties include:
1.K-8 Mathematics Education: Support Educator Formation and Curriculum Design (35%): The Associate Program Director will assist the elementary mathematics faculty for ACE Teaching Fellows with developing, refining, and supporting the implementation of the elementary and middle school mathematics curriculum for ACE Teaching Fellows Catholic school summer program. The Associate Program Director will be tasked with continuing to refine the curriculum and assessments to align with best practices from the science of learning and ensure the resources are easily accessible for early career classroom teachers. To support the formation of elementary ACE Teaching Fellows, the Associate Program Director will manage and refine the mathematical content knowledge activities used in the summer teaching lab. The goal for these activities is to improve elementary mathematics teachers’ content knowledge in all domains of elementary mathematics (~25% of time). As part of the connection between research and practice, the Associate Program Director will also assist the Tutor-ND team with the management of K-8 mathematics curriculum and assessments for tutoring (~10% of time).
2. Math Cognition Research: Project Coordinator for Research on Number Sense (40%): The Associate Program Director will be the lead project coordinator for a new National Science 40 Foundation funded research project studying 3rd-8th grade students’ number sense. This project focuses on studying the natural progression of 3rd-8th grade students’ number sense, both within a school year and cross-sectionally across grade levels, through classroom assessments and in-depth interviews of student thinking. As project coordinator, the Associate Program Director will work closely with the PI and co-PI’s of the project to meet the goals outlined in the grant proposal, managing relationships with all relevant stakeholders, including school partners, participating teachers and students, and advisory board members.
3. Math Cognition Research: Manage Number Sense Research Lab (25%): To support the NSF-funded project as well as additional research on students’ mathematical cognition, the Associate Program Director will manage the day-to-day workings of the Number Sense Lab, including mentoring undergraduate research assistants, organizing participant recruitment, and supervising data collection and coding. In addition, the Associate Program Director will assist with research dissemination efforts for the number sense research program as well as other mathematics education research within Tutor-ND (~5% of time). This will include a particular focus on research dissemination for educators and the public. The Associate Program Director will manage the Number Sense assessment platform for researchers and educators.
