Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Nursing (SON) within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has an outstanding legacy of serving the people of southeastern N.C. through education, scholarship, and service. The SON is dedicated to excellence in the development of healthcare professionals through in-depth education, professional partnerships, applied research, regional engagement, and community outreach and impact. The SON is located in McNeill Hall, a state-of-the-art facility that includes offices, classrooms, a large lecture hall, computer laboratories, student success areas, learning commons, and the Simulation Learning Center. The Simulation Learning Center uses high, medium, and low-fidelity human patient simulators for nursing education as teaching and learning tools. Using simulation, we strive to create a realistic environment and a powerful learning experience that promotes the student’s cognitive, affective, physical, and social development and the incorporation of inter-professional collaborative experiences for students across the degree programs in the College.

Over 2,500 undergraduate and nearly 600 graduate students are enrolled in programs within the SON. The SON has over 80 full-time faculty.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Simulation Technology Specialist’s duties include:
Providing technical and mechanical support for all simulations, skill labs, and other simulation center activities
Setting up, installing, and demonstrating proficiency in the operation of general and specialized IT hardware and software for mannequins, medical equipment, and other lab equipment
Ensuring optimal functioning of technology and systems through regularly scheduled testing, updates, preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance
Providing specialized technical support and troubleshooting for simulation equipment and services
Demonstrating working knowledge with operation and maintenance of audiovisual equipment
Supporting simulation center users in the safe and appropriate use of simulation equipment and resources
Providing supervision and training to student workers, simulation staff, faculty, and visitors
Developing materials and techniques for implementing moulage
Maintaining knowledge of and compliance with institution and industry policies, standards, and regulations
Cross-training to other simulation responsibilities
Supporting the Simulation Learning Center and its personnel by performing all other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from high school and one year in the field of technology related to the positions’ role. Computer coursework may be substituted year for year for the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
Preference will be given to those who possess the following:
Associate or baccalaureate degree in biomedical science, computer science, health care science (i.e. nursing, respiratory therapy, etc.), or related field
Progressive work experience in simulation operation/education/training using human patient simulators and audiovisual equipment
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced work environment
Highly organized, detail-oriented, with attention to detail
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Strong customer service skills
Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS software applications, and database use
Ability to assess, troubleshoot and fix equipment and technology issues in a timely fashion
Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology
Knowledge of current and emerging simulation technologies.
Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification
