CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Under general supervision, the Stage Supervisor is responsible for the safe operation of backstage including all moving scenery and rigging. The Stage Supervisor trains and supervises all backstage crew. The Stage Supervisor maintains scenery in show ready condition and is backstage for all rehearsals on stage including tech and dress rehearsals and performances. The Stage Supervisor assists in the Scene Shop preparing the scenery for the incoming show. A high level of independent judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills are required.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in the installation of scenery so to be familiar with construction.
Maintains scenery in show-ready condition and makes sure scenery is properly set for each onstage rehearsal and performance.
Maintains backstage areas including the scenery dock in safe and sanitary condition.
Performs pre-show check list for all scenic elements.
Trains and supervises crew to run back stage including over hire and practicum students.
Enforces safe work practices.
Supports scene shop activities as necessary; construct, transport, store, install, dispose of and remove scenery elements as necessary.
Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered, and safe work environment.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED, and five years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater preferred.
Knowledge of stage rigging systems and scene shifting techniques and excellent supervisory skills. Knowledge of scenery and props construction, such as wood, metal, fabrics, paints, rigging materials, and plastics.
Ability to operate hand, portable electric and pneumatic, and stationary power tools commonly found in scene shops.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and heavier loads assisted.
Requires weekend and evening work.
