Job Summary
The University of Utah’s Center for Medical Innovation’s (CMI) mission is to educate, empower, and inspire the next generation ofhealthcare innovators as we work to discover innovations that improve healthcare. To do this, we create a one-stop-shopenvironment that assists both the novice and experienced innovator through ideation, concept generation, intellectual property,market analysis, prototyping and testing, business plan development, regulatory affairs, and commercialization.
The CMI is looking for an entry-level engineer who has a strong fundamental knowledge of core mechanical engineeringprinciples. This position will be responsible for leading a team of student fellows in providing consulting services for faculty andstudent innovators who are looking to prototype a predefined device concept. Projects will require the use of 3D modeling, 3Dprinting, as well as a wide range of mechanical shop tools and equipment. This position will also assume many prototyping shopmanagement responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Lead the engineering development of assigned venture studio projects, applying mechanical engineering principles to novel, complex medical devices.
Conduct product testing and create models and prototypes to ensure product performs as designed.
Conduct feasibility assessments and perform failure analysis studies.
Create and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) in design work.
Manage project schedules and budgets.
Perform clinical and pre-clinical assessments, as required.
Perform maintenance and repairs on prototyping equipment, as needed.
Support the department’s ISO-13485 certified Quality Management System through documentation and training, as needed.
Establish and work with external vendors to support venture studio project development, as needed.
Perform other responsibilities, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required.
Specific areas of expertise may be preferred by departments.
This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Preferences
Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, or a related field preferred
Requires strong competency in 3D modeling and CAD
Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, strong communication, and ability to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges.
