Primary Purpose of Position
The primary responsibilities for this position will be expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, publish, and secure external funding for research in Fluid-Structure Interaction, including:
Aerothermodynamics Principles: Demonstrate expertise in aerodynamics, propulsion, hypersonic flow, thermodynamics, and continuum mechanics, with a focus on durability, fatigue, fracture, aerospace structures, or nuclear applications.
Fluid-Structure System Design: Demonstrate proficiency in the use of CFD tools for designing and analyzing fluid-structure interaction systems. Experience with modeling, experimental prototyping, and system optimization is preferred.
Component Analysis: Apply of design thinking and systems thinking to fluid-structure components.
Fluid Behavior: Show an understanding of fluid behavior at extreme temperatures, including applications in nuclear and aerospace systems.
Multi-Physics with Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods: Demonstrate capability to model and analyze fluid-structure interaction under dynamic loading and complex boundary conditions.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, engaging in program assessment and service to the department, College, and University as needed.

The College of Engineering (COE), with over 2,577 students, has 5 Doctoral programs, 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and EAC ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bio-, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a CAC ABET-accredited program Computer Science. The Mechanical Engineering Department has 15 full-time faculty members and offers BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees. The department enrolls over 451 undergraduate students, 25 masters and 26 doctoral students. The department currently offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The ME undergraduate degree program has an Aerospace Option for students who are interested in aerodynamics, aero-propulsion, avionics and aero-structures. An Honors program is available for those students with a strong academic background and research interest. Our faculty members and their graduate students perform research in such areas as materials, aerospace, structural health monitoring, thermal management, micro-mechanics and micro-fluidics, CFD, control systems, design, robotics and manufacturing.
Minimum Requirements
A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field, conferred by the time of appointment.
Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
A commitment to engaging and conducting research within a technically diverse, multicultural community of faculty and students.
Dedication to advancing engineering education and research in the field of Fluid-Structure Interaction through innovative pedagogical practices.
A proven record of research and scholarship in the area of Fluid-Structure Interaction.
Interest in interdisciplinary research and the ability to contribute to at least one of the College’s five research focus areas:
Energy and Sustainability
Cybersecurity and Network Operations
Health Care Applications
Multiscale Materials
Aerospace and Transportation Applications
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
A minimum of five years of post-doctoral, industrial, or government experience in the field of Fluid-Structure Interaction.
A Professional Engineer (PE) License is strongly encouraged but not required.
A proven track record of effective teaching and scholarly publications in the area of Fluid-Structure Interaction.
A demonstrated commitment to service at the community, university, and professional levels.
A history of mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
Clear potential to become a recognized scholar in their field of expertise.
