Position Description
The National Center for Physical Acoustics Applied Acoustics Group focuses on sensors and measurement systems in physical acoustic environments. Our work with sensors and measurement systems extends beyond research, concentrating on the practical application of acoustical principles to real-world systems and challenges.
Our work in sensors and measurement systems brings together acoustics with various knowledge areas and disciplines. These knowledge areas and disciplines include artificial intelligence, data analysis, quantum mechanics, machine learning, and robotics. Researchers use an interdisciplinary approach to create tangible demonstrators that validate concepts and serve as prototypes for future development.
Past efforts include technology for the acoustical detection of termites and fire ants, minimizing wind noise on microphones, and creating systems that operate effectively in noisy environments, such as battlefields-all with a focus on advanced signal processing and reducing power consumption in deployed systems.
Our applied acoustics team collaborates closely with government agencies, responding to their needs rather than initiating independent projects. While NCPA does not ultimately manufacture products, our partners and collaborators can use NCPA demonstrators to create solutions and manufacture technology or products.
The University of Mississippi's National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to work with scientists and other NCPA staff to develop and design unique and state-of-art acoustic hardware systems and software for research, development and applications. Job responsibilities will include mechanical system design and development, electrical system design and development, embedded system software development, management of group work labs, supervision of student workers and field test preparations and participation.
Examples of Worked Performed
Work with scientists and other NCPA staff to develop and design unique and state-of-art acoustic hardware systems and software for research, development and applications. Job responsibilities will include mechanical system design and development, electrical system design and development, embedded system software development, management of group work labs and supervision of student workers.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum requirements for this position are a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or directly related field and five years of relevant experience or a master’s degree. The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in all aspects of sensor system design and integration including both hardware and software components. The successful applicant will have a broad range of demonstrated experience in both electrical and mechanical hardware and design techniques. The successful candidate will have strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge of applied linear algebra and experience translating mathematical solutions into software is highly desirable. Knowledge of physical acoustics and acoustic array hardware and software are highly desirable. Experience in circuit board design and programming is highly desirable. Applicant must be able to physically participate in outdoor field testing including the setup, teardown and maintenance of sensor system hardware and platforms. The selected candidate must be eligible for U. S. Security Clearance. Due to the Defense related nature of the work former miliary service is highly desirable.
Interview Requirements: Any candidate who is called for an interview must notify the Department of Equal Opportunity/Regulatory Compliance in writing of any reasonable accommodation needed prior to the date of the interview.
