  • The George Washington University, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (GW Engineering) is a complex and innovative academic unit with a highly active research enterprise. The Finance Department of GW Engineering oversees and facilitates the financial operations and planning that align with the overall University and GW Engineering goals and priorities. The team seeks a Senior Financial Analyst to contribute to the areas of financial reporting, annual budget, forecast, and modeling, and data analysis. This position reports to the Finance Director and collaborates with faculty and staff throughout GW Engineering.

    This senior financial analyst position works as an integral part of the Finance team to perform a wide variety of complex analytical and administrative duties. This position uses data analytics and trend analysis to drive decision-making, monitor budget performance, and support strategic financial planning.

    Primary responsibilities include collaborating with finance staff to prepare multi-year budgets and forecasts, monitor departmental budget performance, and provide detailed account reconciliation and trend analysis. This position generates financial data, compiles and maintains financial reports and dashboard, and provides monthly variance analysis to the finance director and departments leaders, including recommendations for resource reallocation and corrective actions.

    Additional responsibilities include revenue and enrollment forecast, compensation data analysis, and sponsored research support and liaison, risk mitigation and other corrective actions. This role also supports the Finance team with developing and documenting internal financial controls, management practices, and SOPs, and performs ad-hoc reports and other requests as requested by the finance director.

    Responsibilities include:
    Prepare multi-year budget and forecasts, including revenue and enrollment forecast
    Monitor departmental budget performance; report findings to finance director and department leaders and make corrective actions
    Perform detailed account reconciliation and other trend analysis such as compensation analysis and financial aid tracking and forecast
    Run monthly data and maintains the school finance dashboard
    Generate annual external reports such as NSF Herd Survey and other school-wide financial reports
    Support sponsored research activities such as labor
    redistribution and cost transfer justification
    Develop manuals and SOP by working with subject matter experts within the school.
    Perform reclassification journal entries, interdepartmental transfers, and other year-end JEs
    Oversee the capital equipment budget and tracking
    Coordinate with the post award team to complete sponsored research
    Complete other ad hoc reports and relevant tasks as assigned

    Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Advanced Excel and Database skills, including experience with financial modeling and trend analysis is preferred
    Strong analytical skills with the ability to effectively present data, trends, and findings, to a small group of audience
    Experience with budgeting and financial analysis in higher education is desired
    Strong communication skills and the ability to connect with a range of stakeholders who have varying degrees of financial competency
