  • Position Summary
    The Department of Biology in the College of Science and Health at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse (UWL) invites applications for an academic year, non-tenure track, Teaching Assistant Professor position in Science Education. Our new colleague will teach undergraduate lecture and/or lab sections in one or more biology courses, coordinate general biology lecture and laboratory sections, train and supervise graduate students serving as lab instructors, and teach a science methods course and supervise prospective middle school and high school teachers. We seek an engaging teacher with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring.

    Under general supervision of the Biology department chair, a person in this position is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising students, and supervising teacher candidates in their field and student teaching placements. In addition to preparing for and holding classes, teaching involves maintaining currency in the content area related to the teaching assignment, evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours. In addition, this individual will provide service to the department, college, and university and is likely expected to provide service to the community and/or the profession. Other duties may be assigned by the chair or dean.

    Responsibilities are expected to include teaching undergraduate courses in the following areas: biology and science methods. In addition, there is an expectation for this individual to supervise teacher candidates in field and/or student teaching experiences and provide academic advising for science education teacher candidates.

    This position is affiliated with the School of Education (SOE) and the dean of SOE will provide feedback regarding hiring and personnel reviews. School of Education affiliated staff are expected to be engaged in scholarship, service activities and continuous learning to inform and enhance the work they do with prospective teachers. Some additional work hours outside the academic school year may be required in order to align duties with the K-12 school year. Staff in this position collaborate with the School of Education on advising and curricular-related issues.

    Required Qualifications
    Hold a masters or doctorate degree in biology education, biology, or a closely related natural science field.
    Prior teaching experience at a post-secondary level is required.
    Currently hold or previously held a teaching license in general science or are able to obtain teaching licenses in at least two of the following: earth science, chemistry, biology, physics. License(s) should be at the middle and/or high school level.
    Minimum of 3 years of science education teaching experience in U.S. K-12 schools or the equivalent, teaching general science or at least two of the following: earth science, chemistry, biology, physics
    Preferred Qualifications
    Doctorate degree preferred.
    Teaching experience at both the middle and high school levels
    Experience in multiple science content areas (earth science, chemistry, biology, physics)
    Experience with the edTPA teacher performance assessment
    Experience as a cooperating teacher and/or student teaching supervisor
