  • Position Summary
    The College of Optical Sciences is seeking applicants for a Mechanical Technician to fabricate, handle and test small and large optical components and assemble complex optical/mechanical systems.

    Due to ITAR/EAR restrictions the successful candidate must be a U.S. Citizen or hold permanent resident status.

    Duties & Responsibilities
    Assembles, performs modifications, troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance on a wide variety of standard and highly specialized mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and or electronic equipment.
    Operates many types of equipment including highly sophisticated, specialized unique systems designed and constructed solely for scientific research projects.
    Specifies and assembles sophisticated tooling and test equipment for the fabrication and testing of optical components appropriate to projects.
    Handles precision small and large optical components.
    Assists in the design and use of specialized fixtures for handling large optical components
    Fabricates, assembles, installs and tests mechanical and optical devices and instruments.
    Makes crates and/or boxes and packs sensitive optical and mechanical components to send to customers.
    Participates in project planning and scheduling.
    Interacts with other University departments and serves as liaison with a variety of vendors when required.
    Inspects and maintains quality control in project critical areas.
    Works with administrative staff and Purchasing Department to procure necessary parts, materials, equipment and services.
    Maintains inventories of standard supplies, tools, equipment and spare parts.
    Set up and operate manual and computer controlled machines under the direction of the Fabrication Manager to lap glass, metal, plastics, ceramics, composites and crystals to proper curve, thickness and surface finish.
    Polishing of optical components to prescribed specifications under direction of Fabrication Manager.
    Supports testing of optical components to determine working characteristics and conformance to specifications using standard and modified optical test equipment and procedures.
    Keeps records, writes reports, procedures and may assist in the preparation of proposals or publications.
    Overnight shift work during fabrication process.
    Additional duties may be assigned.
    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    Minimum Qualifications
    High School Diploma.

    Due to ITAR/EAR restrictions the successful candidate must be a U.S. Citizen or hold permanent resident status.
    A minimum of two years of experience in related technical fields.
    Preferred Qualifications
    Skill in the use of standard mechanical shop tools.
    Skill in operating manual and or CNC mills, lathes and other standard machine shop tools.
