  • The SMDTC Directed Energy Research Division is seeking qualified candidates for experimental and theoretical work examining pulsed laser diagnostics, propagation, and nonlinear interactions with matter. The candidates will be expected to perform basic and applied research with a range of short and ultrashort pulsed lasers in the context of directed energy. Experimental candidates will be expected to assemble, diagnose, and execute experiments with a wide range of pulsed laser systems. Theoretical candidates will be expected to perform modeling and simulation of linear and nonlinear interactions and propagation of pulsed lasers in solid and fluid media. All candidates will be expected to analyze data for publication and presentation to internal Command and Army audiences as well as across DoD and in public fora. MINIMUM requirements: Doctoral degree in Physics, Engineering, Material Science, Computer Science or related STEM discipline DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain a clearance Knowledge of laboratory and/or computational codes such as Python, Matlab, LabView, UPPE, etcetera Demonstrated experience presenting scientific work via peer-reviewed publications and presentations DESIRED qualifications: Advanced implementation of codes such as LabView, Matlab, or Python for the execution and processing of experimental data OR execution of advanced nonlinear propagation codes for ultrashort pulse lasers such a gUPPE For experimental candidates, experience with aligning and maintaining ultrashort pulse lasers systems (with peak powers in the GW and higher regime), diagnostics and experimental setups such as autocorrelators, difference frequency generators, broad spectrum imaging systems, and high-precision spectrometers. For theoretical candidates, alumnus of the School on Extreme Nonlinear Optics in Solids summer program Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team of researchers In addition to a minimum stipend of $107,534, discretionary stipends to support relocation, housing, and research-related travel may be offered.
