1. Register with the U.S. Department of State, the nearest U.S. embassy and the Consular Affairs Department.

2. Keep passports, cash, credit cards and travelers' checks locked away when not in use.

3. Make a photocopy of her passport in case it gets lost or stolen.

4. Avoid risky behaviors

5. Use marked taxis only.

6. Don't travel alone or take shortcuts.

7. Avoid being on the streets at night.

Be careful and not get involved in any public demonstrations such as political rally.

I would make couple copies of the passport. Keep the original locked down when not in use and keep a copy safe in another place just in case the real one is lost.

Try to avoid bringing too many pricy items while studying abroad. Things likes expensive cell phones and cameras are some of the most stolen items.
