There's not a specific requirement as far as being a junior or senior. You can study abroad when you are a freshman. The important thing is for the student to gain the experience.

Most do not have age requirement or you have to reach a certain class level before you can participate in studying abroad program. However, depending on the school's specific programs, there might be class level requirement and that's there simply because the program is gear toward higher level studying and research.
