Just a couple of things off the top of the head. The probably the single most important thing is to give praise. Giving frequent, positive feedback and praise will encourage students to interact more. Another thing will be assigning tasks and homework for students that are customized to their inidividual level, when possible. The goal is to give them something not too easy and not too hard where they get discouraged.
