This is a serious decision to make for the student and what a teacher can do is to sit down with the student and list out the pros and cons of entering into military school. It's important to help the student realize both. You might find it helps the student if you list out their values and priorities with them and then see if that helps them become clearer on whether the military is something they want to pursue.

Find a branch of service that has a good quality mix that fits your personality and skills. Most work with all branches of service in any civilian life (mostly officers). Marines are hard-core and some of the finest and hardest working guys. Navy and AF tend to see the most practical positions. Army has the utmost require for folks right now and has tons of Intel positions (as does AF). Marines have Force Recon... with the Military School for Boys nothing more needed to be said. Navy has SEAL, but so few can build the cut that they wouldn't bond based in desiring to become one unless you absolutely know yourself.
