  • Smart, but Fail in School

What's wrong with students that are bright, but they just can't succeed in school? Are they being lazy and not making the effort?

I think the problem is the fundamental basis of our education system on learning facts and taking tests. Although that works for a lot of students, it doesn't necessarily work for everyone. Some students need to explore, experient things, and fail often. The assumption is that you can just give students books to read, things to learn and encourage them to learn it, then test that they can recall it, but does recalling answers on an exam means understaning the concept?

If you know a little bit about cognitive psychology, then you will understand the brain and your senses can vary from one individual to the next, meaning people can learn things differently. Kind of like some people are visual learner and some people are audio learner. Unfortunately in our education system, teaching is designed to suit one style only. So it's a methodology issue here.

Let me provide another perspective. Students need motivation, self determination and self dedication. And yes, anything is possible, but not without EFFORT. People may have different style of learning, but the truth about life is learn to deal with change and adversity. If their teaching style is not your cup of tea, then you find a way to adapt to it. This is what you need to survive life. It holds true in school and it holds true in life.
