I think it's important to write with personality. The admission office is looking into the content of the essay and look for the applicant's character. A well written essay will put you ahead of many others.

Word on advice regarding writing admission essays. Don’t put off and wait til the last minute to produce your essay. You should start brainstorming in the summer or early in senior year, start thinking about the essay questions for the schools you’re interested in. Your admissions essay should be the most thoughtful and polished piece of writing you’ve ever produced. And you should have someone proof read your writing before submission.

Make sure your essay prove something at the end. The reader must be able to find your main idea and follow it throughout your essay. Try having multiple people proof read before finalizing your draft.

Be personl, do plenty of brainstorming and you can be inspirational. But bring something new to the table, something different, not just what you think the admission office want to hear. Don't try to embed your resume in your essay. Information from your resume are likely to have already shown up in the application somewhere.
