I know of 3 types of scholarships out there. The first one is National Merit Scholarship, which is highly competitive. The second one is Need-based scholarship, this is for students who have been accepted to a school, but unable to pay for it. The third type is Restrictive Specialty Scholarship, which is a special group of award designed by the school individually.

For instance, a church-affiliated colleges might have some specially endowed scholarships for young students who are members of a particular denomination. Other specialty awards might go to students from certain geographic regions. There really can be a wide variety of specialty awards.
