Is attending community college a waste of time? Is it like repeating high school, but just in a different learning environment?

No. It's not a waste of time at all. Community college is a cheaper way for you to get those prereq. classes out of the way before you start taking your 'major classes'.

My suggestion is you can always take first couple of years of community college, build up a strong GPA and then apply to an university. So you will go into the university with a good starting GPA and then you can finish out at the university and get the diploma.
