- For college admission, does the class rank or GPA matter more?
Does somebody know if the class rank or GPA is a more important factor in the college admission process?

I would say GPA is more important because it is more comparable for all applicants and some schools don't even have the class rank.

Well, if your school does have the class rank, they won't even consider GPA. A GPA of 4.0 does not necessarily mean the student is ranked in the top 10%. I think the class rank definitely matters more.

It may depend on the school. Some schools may put more weights on one factor over the others. Keep in mind that the class rank is based on GPA.

I think it really depends on which schools you are trying to get into. Every school or sometimes every states have different admission requirements and standards. I know, in some schoold, they only look at whether if you graduated top 10 or 15% of your class, which doesn't necessary show you are academically well off. In some schools, they look at your GPA only, although that might be a more accurate way to measure academic success, you also have to think about how the school's curriculum play a part in a particular high or low GPA for students.

A lot of the universities take the holistic approach. They see you as a pie and they have different components that fit into that pie. For example, they will look at GPA of course, school involvement, community volunteer work, sports, member of clubs or societies, etc.

A high GPA is not everything if it is accomplished by taking simple, unchallenged courses. Some of the top colleges in the nation see a grade avg of 6.80 and ask themselves the question, 'What does this really mean?' Then they will look at the rest of the applicant's file and especially at the applicant's activities to find out if the applicant is the real deal.

It takes more than a high GPA to get into your desired colleges. Admissions counselors want to see candidates who demonstrate interesting passions and have leadership potential.
